Tom and Christine Sine at Mustard Seed Associates offer the following liturgy as a beginning to this new year...
A focusing liturgy
A new year is dawning and God is with us,
In its light may we see God’s light
In its sounds may we hear God’s voice
In its unfolding may we find God’s purpose.
(Pause for a time of reflection on the year that is past – this can be either silent reflection or if you are using this in a group you may take this opportunity for each person to share their personal reflections)
God we lay the old year down
Its fears and its anxieties, the broken places it exposed
God we lay them down
Its hurts and its failures, the pain it has exposed
God we lay them down
Its joy and its celebration, the love that has embraced us
God we lay them down
(Adapted from Psalm 139)
You have looked deep into our hearts O Lord,
You know all about us,
You know when we are resting and when we are working
From heaven your discover our thoughts
You notice everything we do and everywhere we go
Before we even speak you know what we will say
Nothing about us is hidden from you
Even before we were born you had written in your book what we would do
Everything you do is marvellous of this we have no doubt
We praise you for the wonderful way you created us
Your thoughts are precious to us O God!
Your purposes are far beyond our imagining.
Hebrews 12: 1 - 13
Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we'd better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!
In this all-out match against sin, others have suffered far worse than you, to say nothing of what Jesus went through—all that bloodshed! So don't feel sorry for yourselves. Or have you forgotten how good parents treat children, and that God regards you as his children?
My dear child, don't shrug off God's discipline, but don't be crushed by it either.
It's the child he loves that he disciplines; the child he embraces, he also corrects.
God is educating you; that's why you must never drop out. He's treating you as dear children. This trouble you're in isn't punishment; it's training, the normal experience of children. Only irresponsible parents leave children to fend for themselves. Would you prefer an irresponsible God? We respect our own parents for training and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God's training so we can truly live? While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God's holy best. At the time, discipline isn't much fun. It always feels like it's going against the grain. Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it's the well-trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God.
So don't sit around on your hands! No more dragging your feet! Clear the path for long-distance runners so no one will trip and fall, so no one will step in a hole and sprain an ankle. Help each other out. And run for it!
Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread & forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us & lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom & the power & the glory forever & ever Amen.
God a new year is dawning and you are with us
God you draw us into your presence
So that we can hear your voice
You ask us to listen
So that we can know your ways
You send us out to serve
So that we can be your people
God a new year is dawning and you are with us
Come down God of life
Fill us with you’re your love
Come in Christ of peace
Anoint us with your compassion
Come amongst us spirit of joy
Teach us to celebrate your ways
Go into the world this year
Knowing you have been touched by the triune God
Let your life shine with the love of God
Let your heart be transformed by the compassion of Christ
Let your ways be filled with the joy of the spirit
Amen
